Conflict-free minerals: The Record covers KW Just Minerals
August 9, 2013 | By simon |
The Record published an article about the work that we are supporting being done by the KW Just Minerals campaign: Fostering awareness of the origins of minerals.
The minerals are tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold. Van Houten and the Just Minerals Campaign are concerned about the supply chains for tech companies that start in Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and the Congo. “Rebel groups are taking control of mines throughout the eastern Congo and selling the minerals they extract to Canadian, American and Chinese companies to be used in electronics and jewelry,” Van Houten said. “They are using the profits from that to purchase weapons.”
The Waterloo Region & Guelph chapter is supporting KW Just Minerals with our people power, PR, and by writing an official letter of support for the Conflict Minerals Act, which was written up in this Globe & Mail article. If you want to get involved in this legislative push, you can check out the NDP conflict-free petition page.
EWB Canada has a number of national and global initiatives related to mining, which we’ll talk more about in future blog posts!
