Earth, Fire, Water – A Gourmet Evening of Fair Trade Coffee

April 2, 2010 | By |

Join us for a sensational evening, based entirely around your favourite tall, dark, and handsome beverage – fair trade coffee!

On April 14th, our friends at Planet Bean in Guelph will spill the beans on fair trade coffee, with a focus on the coffee itself.  Earth, fire and water are all integral parts in the life of a coffee bean.   We’ll find out what’s special about fair trade and organic growing and harvesting,  watch a roasting demonstration, and even try a brew or two.

See the colour of the roasting beans changes magically before our eyes, smell the different aromas of the roasting process, listen to the beans pop and crack and taste the delicious end result.

We’ll wrap up the evening with a coffee break to meet other chapter members and introduce some of our exciting upcoming events and initiatives that are waiting for you to take part in!

When: Wednesday, April 14, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Where: Planet Bean Coffee, 259 Grange Road East, Unit #2, Guelph

Space is limited; please RSVP through our contact page to reserve your spot.

CIGI Noon Lecture: “Over 1 Billion NOT Served: The Global Economic Crisis and Food Governance”

April 1, 2010 | By |

The food price crisis of 2007-2008 resulted in widespread hunger and civil unrest across the developing world. The attention directed to the global ‘food crisis’ was quickly overshadowed by the global economic collapse in the latter part of 2008, which came on the heels of months of financial instability. Since the financial crisis erupted, food insecurity has only worsened in developing countries. In 2009, the FAO announced that the number of undernourished people on the planet had surpassed 1 billion, making the millennium development goal of halving world hunger to 450 million by 2015 that much more distant. As the reality of the long term nature of this current hunger crisis has set in, institutions of global governance have responded with plans to improve world food security.

When: Tuesday, April 20, 11:45 am – 1:00 pm
